Huge fire at Deptford recycling centre
Fifteen fire engines and around 100 fire fighters worked into the night to get the warehouse fire at Landmann Way under control.
Crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and other nearby fire stations were brought in to tackle the huge fire which broke out yesterday at around 17.30 at recycling warehouses in Landmann Way, Deptford.
Lewisham council has closed its reuse and recyling centre until further notice and warns that waste and recycling collections will be impacted.
The fire took hold of refuse and the roof of one of the warehouses and destroyed a van and a car.
In a sign of the scale of the blaze, two 32-metre turntables were brought in, which enable fire fighters to tackle the fire from above. London Fire Brigade also brought in a hose layer unit which supports large capacity hose lines over long distances.
Drones were used to provide an aerial view of the blaze to the incident commander.
One person was treated by London Ambulance Service.
Smoke billowed over the local area throughout the evening and local residents were told to keep doors and windows closed.
The fire was brought under control just before midnight and the cause is under investigation.
The council has announced that its teams are clearing up the surrounding areas, streets and parks and that debris can be reported through the Love Clean Streets app.
It warns that the recycling centre will remain closed due to the damage caused and the ongoing investigation.
