Clean up begins after fire at Deptford recycling transfer station

Monday night's fire took hold in warehouses of SSSI, the recycling transfer station used by Lewisham council to sort its household recycling.

Lewisham council temporarily closed its reuse and recycling centre on Landmann Way after Monday's huge fire, the site reopened yesterday.

The fire hold at at SSSI, which operates Deptford Recycling Centre across the road from the council's site.

Lewisham resident's household recycling - everything in the green bin - is sent to SSSI which extracts and sorts recyclable materials for onward transfer to specialist firms.

Materials that can't be recycled are sent to the nearby incinerator South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP).

London Fire Brigade are investigating the cause of the fire.
